The design of this sweeping mosaic mural was inspired by what makes Jackson a truly dynamic and wonderful place to experience, as a resident or visitor. Beyond beautification, the artwork’s mission is to inspire a healthy, active lifestyle and to nourish community connections at the modernized Teton County/Jackson Recreation Center.
A year prior to the mosaic’s installation, Jackson Hole Public Art invited the artist to visit the area’s most iconic sites and meet with people of all ages for design suggestions and feedback. The community collaboration informed the final, playful design: an enormous bull elk, the majestic Teton Range with reflective, snow-capped mountaintops, and fun ways to connect to self, each other, and nature.
This mosaic is made from thousands and thousands of meticulously hand-cut pieces of ceramic tile, glass tile, stained glass, and mirror. Over the course of several months, the artist built the artwork in large sections in her studio. She and her installation team then delivered the sections to the site, mortared each section to the wall, and grouted the remaining seams to create a flowing visual.
The artist would like to thank Teton County/Jackson Parks and Recreation, Jackson Hole Public Art, and the construction team who, collectively, helped make this mosaic possible. May it be enjoyed for decades and generations to come.
