Jackson, WY: Jackson Hole Public Art presents a magical, immersive art installation for all in our community to enjoy. Artist Thomas Dambo will travel to Jackson Hole this spring to construct a giant troll statue, set within the Jackson Hole Land Trust’s beloved community conservation property, Rendezvous “R” Park. The statue will be built entirely from recycled wood and locally-sourced materials. Our giant troll (name to-be-determined) will be about joy and finding adventure in the great outdoors, inviting locals and visitors to investigate our mountainous, wild spaces, and their own imaginations as they explore the massive sculpture on the banks of R Park's pond.

Thomas Dambo is a highly-acclaimed recycling artist, based out of Copenhagen, Denmark. He and his team are known for their giant sculptures, usually whimsical trolls placed out in nature, constructed with recycled and renewable materials sourced locally and inextricably linked to the local community. JH Public Art, in partnership with the Jackson Hole Land Trust, looks to bring Dambo here in May 2021 to build a giant troll for all of the Jackson Hole community.

The sculpture will be interactive, inviting wonder and exploration, and will stay on location for 3-5 years. Each of Dambo’s trolls are incorporated into an ever-evolving folklore, “The Great Story of the Little People”, building upon their inherent mystery and whimsy. The modern tale connects over 55 trolls scattered throughout the world, uniting us as stewards of sustainability, nature-lovers, art enthusiasts, and adventurers of all ages. The goal is to create a piece of art that inspires people to go explore, have outdoor adventures, and consider their environmental impacts.

R Park is an ideal home for Jackson Hole’s soon-to-be troll. “R Park was reclaimed from an industrial gravel pit to fuse exploration, nature, and conservation. Thomas Dambo’s installations mirror that fusion with the incorporation of reused material and a sense of place through imaginative storytelling and unexpected location,” said JHLT Community Conservation Manager/R Park Director Jr Rodriguez. “We’re excited to host a sculpture that takes that wonder to the next level and contributes to the goal of conservation for all in which R Park was founded.”

JH Public Art is working closely with the Jackson Hole Land Trust to avoid disrupting important ecological areas of R Park such as the wetlands and the areas of concentrated wildlife habitat. Both organizations will also work to actively address visitation concerns for as long as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our community and our world. A fundraising campaign began on December 1, which will run through the end of the year. Visit https://bit.ly/dambojh to learn more about this project.
