Celebration for Sebo Walker’s Mural with Carving the Future in Highway 89 Underpass
JACKSON, WYOMING, September 20, 2024 / JH Public Art in partnership with Carving the Future and JH Community Pathways is pleased to announce the installation of a new mural, Pathway to the Future. Kids in Carving the Future’s Skate and Create camp designed the mural in collaboration with professional painter and skater, Sebo Walker, of Portland, Oregon. The Highway 89 Underpass is now home to the mural that was created during the week-long camp in June of 2024 during Walker’s visit to lead the camp.
Pathway to the Future represents the thrill of spending time carving fresh tracks in the mountains or mastering new tricks in the skatepark and celebrates the joy of building community through shared passions. Walker compiled the sketches and ideas of the participants into this cohesive 80-foot mural and campers added the color during skateboarding breaks during camp. Carving the Future promotes physical, mental, and social confidence for each beneficiary as they help alleviate the mental health crisis in Wyoming through board sports.
"I always thought of skateboarding as an art form, how a skateboarder can paint their own canvas on concrete. The skateboarder is free to create any line they envision, their skateboard is the paintbrush. I can see how the art world and the skateboard world collide. To see it come to life on a mural, created and designed by our own community skateboarders, is so exciting. We couldn't have had a better guest artist and professional skateboarder to bring these two worlds together. We (CTF) are very stoked on the finished mural, and we hope it sparks an interest in skateboarding to those who view it," commented Lynn Neil, Carving the Future’s Director.
A special opening celebration of the new mural will be held on September 24 beginning at 4 pm at the Highway 89 Underpass. There will be remarks from Mayor Hailey Morton Levinson, JH Community Pathways Director Brian Schilling, and Lynn Neil. People are strongly encouraged to bike to the tunnel.
