Thea Alvin is an internationally known dry stone mason and sculptor from Morristown, Vermont. Each sculpture uses tons of rock that have been carved and chiseled by hand. Remarkably, Alvin sculpts primarily as a dry mason, without any adhesive, her works being held together by gravity and the careful fitting of each hand-selected slab.
“R Park hosts many patterns in nature, the intertwining flow of the Snake River, the overhead migrations of the geese, streams of elk, waves of moose and deer wandering, nibbling, foraging among its new willows and along the banks of the welcoming ponds. Creating enclosure, a sense of place, meaningful perspective and engagement, I have designed a series of walls that would interpret the observed patterns and give a sense of permanence to them, while allowing passage, flow and movement.”
