River Spiral
Title: River Spiral
Artist: Thea Alvin
Materials: River Stones
Location: Snake River by the Wilson Bridge
Dates: August, 2022
If you passed over the Wilson Bridge or have strolled down Emily’s Pond in late August, 2022, you might have noticed a new feature on the river bottom. The “River Spiral” was created by renowned stone mason Thea Alvin on Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9th with a few helping hands and it will remain in place until the river decides.
Thea Alvin originally came to Jackson Hole for the week, to repair her much loved installation titled “Flow” in the Jackson Hole Land Trust’s Rendezvous Park. “Flow” was built by Thea in 2018 and it was in need of restoration to bring it back to more original (and secure) status.
Remarkably, Alvin sculpts primarily as a dry mason, without any adhesive, her works being held together by gravity and the careful fitting of each hand-selected slab. Many thanks to Two Oceans Builders and Chris Ludwig for their help in this restoration project.
“River Spiral” is a delight, inviting you to reflect on time, and wonder at the connection between us and nature.
