“the time in place” was commissioned for WildWalls 2021 by Trio Bistro and The Nature Conservancy with project support from JH Public Art. Continuing a tradition of bringing the art and science communities together, WildWalls is a highly visual, interactive, and educational annual event without the confines of a traditional venue, making it accessible to thousands of people daily. Local artist Katy Ann Fox painted the mural over the course of three weeks in the spring of 2021 in response to current scientific data and developments from within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The mural depicts local flora on a massive scale, rising above a view of Blacktail Butte, and is activated by four different augmented reality stories along the 80-foot wall, highlighting the state of pikas, wildflowers, glaciers, and fire ecology.

Katy Ann Fox is originally from north-central Idaho and moved to the Jackson Hole area after earning her Masters in Fine Art degree at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. She currently lives in Driggs, Idaho and her work can be found at www.katyannfox.com. She was selected for the project by a committee of local business owners and arts professionals.

My WildWalls mural is truly a community effort. The conversations I had with strangers walking by or appreciative community members were so positive and invigorating. This project really felt like a great awakening — something to shake up my days and push my artistic process but stay true to my voice.
