Trout Rising
Title: Trout Rising
Year: 2017
Artist: Nicole Gaitan
Medium: Aluminum, Acrylic Paint, Urethane coating
Funding By: Orvis
To commemorate our community’s passion for fly fishing and conservation work to protect scenic rivers, creeks, and streams, Jackson Hole Public Art and Orvis worked together to commission a site-specific project for the metal clad Orvis building.
Artist Nicole Gaitan designed 5 wild trout, cut from aluminum, painted in her signature style, and finished with a durable urethane coating. The trout swim toward Flat Creek, which flows quietly behind this location. Titled, Trout Rising, their bright colors elicit the excitement of a great catch, and activate the otherwise non-descript wall.
Nicole worked with Premier Powder Coating and Fabrication in Rexberg, Idaho to laser cut and install the trout. Jorgensen & Associates provided engineering services for the project. Along with Orvis, the building owners contributed resources and Jackson Hole Public Art facilitated the commissioning and fabrication process.
“We believe in supporting the communities where we do business. Our mission is “to help people, including ourselves, live more meaningful lives by connecting to the adventure and wonder of the natural world.” In the words of the late Normal Maclean, ’all good things - trout as well as eternal salvation - come by grace; and grace comes by art; and art does not come easy.’”
