About WildWalls

Jackson’s downtown streets welcome two new permanent murals and twelve temporary murals during JH Public Art’s annual WildWalls event. Beginning June 24, blank alley walls are transformed into an open-air gallery that runs through September. Local artists collaborated with science communities to create art that tells visual ecological stories that become interactive using mobile devices. This art gallery is outside a traditional venue, making WildWalls accessible to thousands of people daily.

Artists Kika Macfarlane and Helen Seay were selected for this year’s two large-scale, permanent murals. Macfarlane is a visual designer and illustrator based here in the Tetons, and she has painted a 50’-long mural sponsored by Dave Hansen Whitewater and the Snake River Fund and inspired by the wild and scenic Snake River. The mural can be found on the north side of Dave Hansen Whitewater’s Broadway headquarters. Helen Seay, a visual artist living and creating on the west side of the Tetons, has created a mural that focuses on recreating responsibly in bear country. Her mural can be found at Shirt Off My Back (on the Pearl Street alley) and was completed in partnership with Grand Teton National Park Foundation. The temporary, wheatpaste mural artists include Ben Roth, Cara O’Connor, Ava Reynolds, Susan Grinels, Josh Winkler, Natalie Connell, Susan Marsh, Nicolette Maw, Mae Orm, Sarah Wadas, Julia Brady and JH High School students.  Maps of all murals can be found online at www.jhpublicart.org or at local businesses and the JH Chamber of Commerce office.

WildWalls 2022 combines murals with augmented reality (AR) features to promote a greater understanding and awareness of the region’s ecosystem through contemporary scientific research. WildWalls AR features are hosted on the Hoverlay app, available for free on all smartphones. JH Public Art works with the selected artists and collaborating organizations to generate educational content that brings each mural alive. This year’s AR animations have been designed by Kika Macfarlane and Tala Schlossberg.
