A year-long public art exhibit highlighting Indigenous artists whose ecological knowledge stewards the natural resources of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and beyond.
Join us as we celebrate artist Ben Pease Grand Mural Opening called Reimagining Connections located at the Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center on Monday, October 28th at 10am. Learn from a unique, digitally reproduced mural by Ben Pease who comes from the Valley of Chiefs District on the Crow Indian Reservation (Crow/Northern Cheyenne) in Lodge Grass, Montana.
This mural invites us to rethink our understanding of wilderness. Rather than viewing it as an untouched, isolated place, we celebrate it as a living, evolving space deeply intertwined with human history and culture. Traditional definitions often overlook the profound relationships that Indigenous peoples—such as the Shoshone-Bannock, Crow, and many other nations—have nurtured with these lands for generations. Acknowledging the historical displacement and disruption of Indigenous stewardship, we hope to inspire a renewed perspective on engaging with the natural world and our shared connections.
We envision a future where Indigenous communities reclaim their roles as caretakers of their ancestral lands, collaborating to restore balance and stewardship. Embracing co-management honors traditional ecological knowledge and promotes sustainable practices that benefit all. By integrating Indigenous leadership into the stewardship of wilderness, we can foster a harmonious relationship between people and nature, allowing both to thrive together.
